This course is intended to teach a new student the capabilities and basics of using a 2.5D CNC router. Once the course is complete, a student should be able to plan, design, and build a project using a CNC router. Upon completion of this course, the student can complete a checkout on the Victoria Makerspace CNC, and should be able to use the CNC on their own.

The primary material for this course will be wood, however, use of plastics and soft metals will be discussed as well.

Students will have the opportunity to choose one of several course projects, example: a tool box, stool, etc.

This course is not intended to teach CAD; it is expected that the student can produce a model or .dxf/ .svg file to create toolpaths using VCarve.

Instructor, Jeff Phillips:

As a constant question asker, I drove my mom nuts in the house and started spending time woodworking with my dad in the garage at 4 years old. Since then I have had a lifelong passion for all things woodworking and carpentry. Professionally I’m a mechanical engineer, and I’ve had a very rewarding career in the Canadian Forces, but I’ve always come back to woodworking on the side. After learning about CNC machining and manufacturing in university, I further pursued this in my own shop with woodworking. In 2016 I started a commercial woodworking shop, and I started manufacturing children’s furniture for home use and schools. Unfortunately, with the rise of COVID in 2020 I had to sell my shop, and I opted to move to Victoria. My goal now is to learn as much as I can about woodworking and machining, teach what I know, and build the most incredible furniture I can for my spouse
