This is a meetup to get acquainted with our surface mount technologies at Makerspace. This meetup will be part demo and part hands-on workshop.
Mike Teachman will be stepping through the surface mount build process, mostly with hands-on steps:
- demo of making solder paste stencil on our Universal laser cutter
- applying solder paste to a circuit board using the laser cut stencil. This part is hands-on. All participants will get to apply solder paste to their own circuit board. Thanks to Sean @procrock for supplying us with circuit boards
- inspecting your solder paste application using our electronics microscope
- attaching electronics components to the circuit board using our manual vacuum pick and place. This is also hands-on for everyone.
- inspecting you pick and place work using our electronics microscope
- baking your circuit board in our new reflow oven, the Controleo3.
- inspecting the final product using our microscope.
In the end you will get hands-on experience to build what is essentially in everyone's mobile phone - a circuit board populated with surface mount components. Except the parts we will work with are a manageable size.
No previous electronics experience is needed as we're not designing any electronics circuits. I figure we can have a max of 10 members. I don't know if anyone is interested in this, but sign up here if this sounds interesting. It's a free event.
There will be snacks, too !
